Building Future Families was born from a truth I could no longer ignore: families in the Texas child welfare system were hurting in silence. Foster, adoptive, and kinship caregivers were carrying impossible burdens with too little information, too few resources, and almost no voice in the decisions that shaped their lives. I knew that had to change.

Building Future Families did not begin as an organization. It began as a cry for help—quiet at first, then louder, then impossible to ignore.

Before BFF existed, I was simply a mother trying to understand why the promises made to my family didn’t match the reality we were living. I remember sitting at my kitchen table late at night, paperwork spread everywhere, searching for answers that no one seemed willing—or able—to give. I remember the fear of not knowing what my child had endured, the confusion of navigating a system that felt impenetrable, and the loneliness of realizing that the support we were promised was not coming.

But I also remember the moment I realized I wasn’t alone.

I founded Building Future Families because families deserved a place where they could speak openly without fear. A place where truth wasn’t punished. A place where caregivers could find community, clarity, and the courage to advocate for themselves and their children. What started as a small circle of parents sharing their stories has grown into a statewide movement for transparency, justice, and reform.

Today, BFF stands as a voice for families who have been unheard for far too long. We fight for honest information, trauma-informed support, and systems that honor the dignity of both children and caregivers. We bring lived experience into rooms where decisions are made. We challenge practices that harm families. And we create spaces—like FAST—where caregivers can speak boldly, knowing they are supported and never alone.

Our work is deeply personal because the system touches real lives. Real children. Real families. Real stories that deserve to be told with honesty and compassion.

If you are a caregiver reading this, I want you to know: your story matters. Your voice matters. And you do not have to carry this alone.

Caregivers from across Texas were whispering the same truths behind closed doors. They were exhausted, overwhelmed, and carrying trauma that wasn’t theirs to carry. They were trying to love children who had been through the unimaginable, all while navigating a system that often left them in the dark. And they were doing it quietly, because speaking up felt risky.

That silence broke something in me—and it also ignited a fire.

As an adoptive parent myself, I have lived some of the painful realities that many adoptive families face—the unanswered questions, the missing history, the unexpected trauma, the isolation, and the overwhelming responsibility of trying to help a child heal without the support you were promised. My family’s journey opened my eyes to the systemic gaps that place both children and caregivers at risk and the community at large. It also ignited a calling in me: to ensure no family walks this road alone and no truth is buried beneath bureaucracy.

Since 2015, Building Future Families has grown from a small community of caregivers into a statewide advocacy organization committed to transparency, justice, and meaningful reform. Our work is grounded in lived experience and driven by a simple belief: when caregivers are supported, children thrive.

Every day, we fight for a Texas where families receive transparency, up-to-date trauma-informed services, and the respect they deserve. We elevate caregiver voices in legislative hearings, partner with agencies to improve practice, and create safe spaces where families can speak openly without fear of judgment or retaliation. Through FAST—Foster/Adoptive Parents Speaking Together—we are building a movement of caregivers who are shaping the future of child welfare in our state.

This work is incredibly difficult. It requires courage, persistence, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. But it is necessary work. And it is work we will continue until every child and every family is seen, heard, and supported.

To every caregiver who has trusted us with your story—thank you. To every partner who has joined us in this mission—your commitment matters. And to every child whose life has been touched by the system—you are the reason we fight.

Together, we are building something better. Something honest. Something just. Something worthy of each family we serve.

If you are a partner, policymaker, or community member, thank you for standing with us. Change happens when courage meets collaboration, and we are building something powerful together.

This is more than advocacy. It is restoration. It is truth-telling. It is hope in action.
